African American National Biography, accessed December 27, 2014, via Oxford African American Studies Center database: |b (Buckner, Milt; Milton Brent Buckner; jazz musician, pianist, composer, arranger; born 10 July 1915 in St. Louis, Missouri, United States; raised by a drummer George Robinson, member of Walton’s band; was inspired to teach himself to write scores for big bands; impressed by his effort, Walton’s band members sent him to Detroit Institute of Arts; served as a staff arranger for McKinney’s Cotton Pickers; was back in Cox’s band (1934); toured with Jimmy Raschell’s band (1935); worked with Lionel Hampton’s big band, Detroit (1941); formed an organ trio with the drummer Sam Woodyard and the saxophonist Danny Turner; performed at Lennie’s-on-the-Turnpike in Boston, Massachusetts; recorded in two albums in Europe and played in the documentary movie Swingmen in Europe (1977); died 27 July 1977 in Chicago, Illinois, United States)
