He studied classical music at the Peabody Institute (1972) and earned a degree in jazz composition and arranging from Berklee College of Music (1981-1985). He worked with Jon Hendricks (1986-1988) and with Terence Blanchard-Donald Harrison Quintet (1988-1990), and was a member of Wynton Marsalis’s band (1991). He signed with Atlantic label (1993). He was a member of Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (1995-1996) and worked with Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All Star Big Band. He won the Eubie Blake Fellowship and the Oscar Peterson, Quincy Jones, and Count Basie Scholarships awards)
