African American National Biography, accessed June 24, 2015, via Oxford African American Studies Center database: (Jones, Elvin; percussionist, jazz musician; born 09 September 1927 in Pontiac, Michigan, United States; played in the house group at the Bluebird Inn (1949-1952); worked with the vibraphonist Teddy Charles and the pianist Bud Powell, was with the bassist Charles Mingus’s band at the 1955 Newport Jazz Festival, and recorded with Miles Davis; played on Sonny Rollins’s Live at the Village Vanguard; worked with the Pepper Adams-Donald Byrd Quintet, the trombonists Tyree Glenn and J. J. Johnson, the trumpeter Harry ’Sweets’ Edison, and the tenor saxophonist Stan Getz; six year stint as drummer with the John Coltrane Quartet; put together groups known as the Elvin Jones Jazz Machine; died 18 May 2004 in Englewood, New Jersey, United States).
